| Description | Essay on improvements in the art of bleaching. (There is a pencil note [?by James Watt jr.] on the title page: 'by James Rennie, A.M.')
The full title is given inside as: 'An Essay on the Improvements in the Art of Bleaching by the Application of the Principles of Chemistry.'
here is a notice by the author before the contents page which reads as follows:
'If any apology be thought necessary, for the author writing on a subject so apparently out of his line of study, he would state, that he found, while composing it in his spare hours, more amusement than he could have derived from light reading. He has been indebted for his information chiefly to Home, Des Charmes, Parkes, Higgins, Berthollet, Chaptal, The Edinburgh Encyclopaedia, Rees' Encyclopaedia, and the various Scientific Journals both English and Foreign.-- Although he uses the term Chlorine in preference to Oxymuriatic acid, he has thought proper to retain the term oxymuriate for the compounds, as the new terms are scarcely yet come into use even among Chemists.' |
