| Description | There are two bundles of miscellaneous papers concerning minerals and geology, described as ‘mineralogical and metallurgical’ papers by James Watt jr., by whom both the bundle labels have been written. The second bundle has two drafts of Gregory’s paper on Basalt and a copy of the printed paper which was read at the Royal Society on 10 May 1804. The accounts for printing the paper can be found in MS 3219/7/26. There is also a paper entitled: ‘Sketch of the Mineralogy of the County of Cornwall’. James Watt jr. has added to this : ‘drawn up by Gregory Watt for Mr W. Withering Oct. 1798.’ A press copy of this work can be found in MS 3147/11/11. William Withering jr. presumably returned the original to James Watt jr. after Gregory’s death, along with the poems etc., in MS 3219/7/58. See MS 3219/6/2W for a letter from William Withering jr. (The Larches) to James Watt jr. (——), 14 Nov. 1804, where he says that he sends ‘G[regory]'s essay on the mineralogy of Cornwall.’ In the printed volume of Werner’s work owned by Gregory, there is an extensive manuscript in his hand bound in to the front, entitled 'Mineral System', (1802). Another volume contains manuscript notes by Gregory Watt on various subjects, 1799 - 1802, is indexed, and includes notes on the following: geology in Wales, 1799; iron furnaces in Perrigeux, 1802; ‘Observations to be communicated to Prof. Haiiy after perusing his Traité de Mineralogie, 1803.’; geology in Italy; geology in Scotland; extracts from the Journal des Mines; experiments on carbonate of lime, which were begun in Feb. 1804, etc. In another volume is a table of minerals; written on the cover is ‘Tables Synoptique’ in black ink. Most of the contents are in French. There is an 1808 etching by Francis Eginton (Birmingham), made from a drawing by William Creighton and titled : 'A Basaltic Quarry on Bare Hill near Rowley, Staffordshire.' |
