| Description | The documents in this series were listed in Matthew Boulton's 'Catalogue of Papers MB's Counting Room 1760-1790' (MS 3782/13/157), as 'Salt & Startin marriage negotiations', and were contained, according to the entry, in Box B. The Salts and the Startins were both prominent Birmingham banking families, friends of the Boultons. Charles Startin and Eliza Salt wished to marry, a union evidently strongly disapproved of by the Salt family. Matthew Boulton and Samuel Garbett seem to have been consulted in negotiations for a marriage settlement which would protect part of Miss Salt's fortune for her own or her family's future use in the event of her death without issue or Charles Startin predeceasing her.
