Description'Gilt Buttons 1790.' (This item is a hardback notebook with a green cover. On the cover is written the preceding inscription. The notebook contains memorandums, observations, calculations, and diagrams relating to buttons. Pages of notes have headings such as; 'To lay a good foundation for making blanks for fine Gilt Buttons.' and 'Gold to be allowed for different strengths or qualities of gilding as follows.' Enclosed in the notebook are seven items. The first four items are memorandums on buttons, one of which reads; 'Buttons of any shape may be exactly measured by grinding the tops with narrow tin foil then cutting it off even with the edges and opening it flat.' The fifth item is a list headed 'Wax..' The sixth item is a sample of gold leaf and the seventh is a letter from William Nelson of Soho to Matthew Boulton, dated, July 5th 1800. The letter is directed to 'No 1. New Bond Street, London.' This last item has now been placed in a separate folder.)
