Description(Directed to Charlotte Matthews’, 6 Green Lettice Lane.)
Dear Father,
I am happy to hear you continue well. Your desire to have your children participate of the blessings of this world your actions daily convince them of. Les delices of turtle are unworthily bestowed upon us; however, to do justice to your present, we have invited some guest whose epicurean merits entitle them to the honor of connoiseur in that line. Miss Mynd will also endeavour to shew it proper honours in the art of cookery.
We have paid our respects to Major Halliday and lady; they engaged us to dinner on Wednesday next.
The change in the Mint is completed, and the presses are now coining deux sols. On Friday last they finished with 5 sous, so that I hope you will not think the time of alteration long.
The price of block tin, as last sold here, was 102; now 100—at least, this is best information I can procure on that subject.
The minds of the lower class of people here are not yet tranquil; on every occasion the[y] shew an inclination to riot and tumult. The last day at Vauxhall, an immense mob being collected, they assailed the spectators and orchestra with a shower of stones, by which many persons were much hurt, nor did they permit any body to depart untill the arrival of a troop of blues, who dispersed them. The playhouse incendiaries are not yet discovered, nor is there much probability of their ever being detected.
Please to present my compliments to Mrs. Matthews and to my other friends in London. I remain your dutiful son,
Mattw. R. Boulton
