F. Garbett to Thomas Johnes, Esqr. (Copy.)
Hereford, March 24th, 1792.
My dear Sir,
I feel myself much interested in every event which can give you satisfaction, and I beg you to believe that I have great pleasure in the account you favour me with "of Mrs. Johnes being in a very fair way to be perfectly restored in her health."
The list of names you now send me is very short of what it was before. If the hearing of the petition should be put off till next session it will be convenient to me; and I depend upon you for as early a notice possible, that I may regulate myself accordingly.
You have an opportunity of doing me a great favour: One Jonathan Hornblower obtained in the year 1781 a patent for a fire engine (which you know is of course granted for the fees). This his invention did not succeed, untill he availed himself of some of the principles of Boulton & Watt's fire engine, which Parliament has given Watt the sole right of using till the year 1800.
Hornblower has applied to Parliament to grant him an aditional number of years to his patent, and is supported by the Cornish gentry, who are aiming to get this sanction of Parliament that they may fight Boulton & Watt (who are uneasy under the infringements of their right) in a court of law. I earnestly intreat your attention to my worthy friend Boulton. He is as generous and honest a fellow as lives, and you may depend upon the justice of his cause. I have taken the liberty of sending him a letter of introduction to you by this post. Any assistance you can give him will be ever gratefully acknowledged by, dear sir, yours, &c.

My dear Friend,
I inclose you a letter to Mr. Johnes, who I trust will do any thing he can for you. As I was writing to him this post, I did not fail to recommend your interest to him in the strongest manner, and I sincerely wish you success.
I am much occupied with the finishing of my melancholy business at this place, but hope to return to Knill on Wednesday.
God bless you.

F. Garbett to Thomas Johnes, Esqr. [Copy.]
Dear Sir,
I take the liberty of introducing to you my friend Mr. Boulton. The petition of one Jonathan Hornblower before Parliament may in its consequences materially affect his interest. I therefore trust you will do me the favour of hearing Mr. Boulton on the subject, when I can have no doubt the justice of his case will be a sufficient recommendation for your assistance and advice, which will always be gratefully acknowledged by, dear sir, your obliged and obedient servant,
F. Garbett

[Francis Garbett to Samuel Garbett.]
Hereford, 24th March 1792.
I hope this will meet my dear father quite well.
I am so much hurried that I can not attend to the Mint papers yet. I hope to get to Knill on Wednesday or Thursday; the children went this day. The auction of furniture begins on Monday. I hope the letters, copy of which you receive with this, will meet your approbation; they go this post.
I am ever your son,
F. Garbett
