DescriptionDear Sir,
The result of my enquiries respecting Mr. Andrew Buchanan is that he is a very honest man, but not supposed to be a man of much property; so far corresponds with your own enquiries. Mr. Christie did do his business but does not now-not, however, from any diffidence of Mr. B. but lest there shou'd be a war with America, in which case individuals might be prevented paying their debts. I daresay therefore you will consider that what is prudent in Mr. C. may also be so in yourself, at least so far as not to embark too deeply; but what strikes me is that Mr. B. ought to pay (at least in part) his first order before he shou'd expect the execution of another, or he shou'd be guaranteed by some person of responsiblity here. He certainly cannot be very much known here, because I enquired thro' two channels, and from the one I cou'd learn nothing of him; the information I now give you is from a friend of Mr. Christie's, but enquired thro' a third person. I am sorry it was out of my power to obtain any information before I wrote you last, but I hope if this tends to increase your fears it will not come too late.
The newspaper of this day will rather surprize you, I think-I mean that the loan shou'd be negotiated before the meeting of Parliament; I shou'd think so large a loan will make cash scarce in spring.
I have heard no news, and have only to add my most hearty wishes for long life and happiness to you, being very truly, dear sir, you most affectionate friend,
C. Matthews
Kind love to your son and daughter. Destroy this letter after having read it.
