DescriptionMy dear Sir,
I cannot suffer one post to pass by without thanking you most cordially for all the pleasure and comfort we experienced so lately with you, in which Mrs. Vere joins. We left Soho with regret, but you know business must be minded, and were more sorry not to take one parting kiss; however, I hope you were a gainer by it, as I left two proxies of a more tender age, and a message by Mrs. Keen to enable you to claim the kisses, lest the coy ladies shou'd cheat you; but I think they will cure of their coyness if steam engines for particular purposes are talked of. All jesting apart, Mrs. Vere and myself have been always so highly gratified by our visits to Soho that you must lay your account in an annual renewal of them.
We performed our journey to admiration, reaching Towcester the first night (a most vile inn) and Hadley last night, and arrived in town about one o'clock to-day. I fell to work directly and am making up my lea way. I hear with concern that your friends the Thorntons will lose a great deal by this vile confiscation of property in Russia; they talk of £200,000, enough to vex them of even their large property.
My love and compliments to all enquiring friends concludes me, dear sir, most faithfully and affectionately yours,
C. Matthews
I left two kisses for your son also with the proxies, which I hope were deliver'd. Mr. Woodward writes to you about Marsh the gardener.
