| Description | Soho-28 May 1790 In answer to your remarks about the Rents-I have no objection to what you fix about the Mill i.e. to pay four Guineas for each lap & to reckon the Brushing Machine equal to Eight Laps so that the whole may now be call'd forty Laps-& for B & S. to pay all repairs that may be wanted for the above 40 Laps above Stairs, & to find Bands; but think that Mr. B shoud pay for all Machinery including Drums Below stairs and also pay the first cost of the Brushing Machine. B & S will also pay for overwork as they now do, but think Mr. B. shoud sometimes make an allowance when the Mill stops on his acct. as it freequently has done I don't mean for any Little accident but when any alterations are making. I am quite at a loss how to reconcile myself to the rent of the other shops I think £140 per annum a very high rent for any Business we either have done or likely to do. I can easily convince myself & I think I coud convince you also that 16/- per Square will bring you in a clear 5 per Ct. I find the difference of our opinion is about £28- per annum & I really think you rather too high. I will willingly give the other Eight if you will give up the Twenty and call the present Shops £120- instead of £140 per annum & if any alteration in the shops shoud take place hereafter you shall either call them 16/ or 20/ as you please. If you must have 140 I will agree to it but I cannot give it with that pleasure I coud wish. |
