| Description | Dear Sr. I found it necessary to settle some matters of consequence before Mr Matthews's departure for France & Holland & therefore I set out on Monday night last from Soho in company wth. Dr George Fordyce & arived in Town on Tuesday morng. early. Yesterday I attended Mr Matthews & his Bride to Church where the timmid trembling pair mutualy plighted their troths. From Church we proceeded to a most magnificent dinner & in ye eveng. we all deserted ye House leaveing the two pit a pat hearts to their own Contemplations. This morng. all seems calm & ye marrd. couple are just set out for France. I have just recvd. your letter of ye 28th July by wch. I perceive that before this reaches, you are, what I most sincerely wish you may long be viz: a happy man. I assure you that nothing shall ever be wanting on my part that has a tendency to promote the Interest, happiness, or pleasure of either or both halves of you- Gainsboro hath appointed to meet me at Holts his attorneys on Monday 5 oClock where I shall say little besides learning his principles & invention. If we had a hundred Wheels ready made & a hundred small Engines like Bow Engine & 20 larg ones exicuted we could readily dispose of them. Therefore let us make hay whilest the sun shines & gather our Barns full before the dark cloud of Age lowers upon us & before any more Tubal Canes, or Watts, or Dr Faustes's, or Gainsbros, arise with Serpents like Moses's that devour all others I have yet heard nothing from either of the Wilkinsons about the pumps for Le Bow 'tis vexatious I think Mr Henderson of Liverpool may be of use to us & we to him He seems to me Modest & sensible & not much of ye Devil about him As to your abscence say nothing about it. I will forgive it this time provided you promise me never to marry again My Wife will be very angry with me for disapointing her of the pleasure of meeting you at Liverpool wch. she had fully set her heart upon but it was impossable to help it Joseph Harrison & Law yet continue at Stratford Le Bow. but will have finished all except ye pumps by Tuesday night & then they shall return on Wednesday & I also, takeing Bedworth in our road When we have got our 2 foot pumps up I think it wd be right to try our Soho Engine with a steam strong enough to work the pumps wth. ye axis in ye Center of ye beam wch. will be almost 19lb upon ye Inch Pray make my Compliments acceptable to Mrs. Watt hopeing I shall have an oppertunity of makeing them my self at Soho or Birmgm. abt. Thusday next The Lord bless & support you farewell Yours most sincerely M: Boulton
