I thought of setting out this ensuing week, but an honest, old woman my Aunt & Mother in law died yesterday and is to be buried upon monday, I must do that Duty to her which I could not do to her daughter, by seeing her laid in the grave- By this means three days are in a manner lost to me and I am afraid I shall not get away before the week following- I have three pieces of news to inform you of My friend Dr Irvine took home a wife last week & in winter he discovered what is the lowest possible degree of heat or the real beggining of the Scale by which means thermometers may be made showing the real quantity of heat in bodies I have persuaded My friend Dr Hutton the famous fossil philosopher to make the jaunt with me & there are some hopes of Dr Blacks coming also. I shall bring up my dividing screw to convince you & other infidels. we have outrageous cold weather at present-and I am quite Stupid Adieu-JW
