DescriptionBush lane Monday night
Dear Sir
To pretend to offer you consolation, under the weight of your present sorrow, I know to be in vain I only beg leave to repeat to you the sentiments which that dear friend we lament, expressed to me upon a similar occasion. Tis our duty as soon as possible to drive from our minds every idea that gives us pain, particularly when in cases like this where our grief can avail nothing. Remember my dear Sir, that our Friend enjoys that repose he so much desired and we ought not to be so selfish as to render ourselves unhappy by the perpitual reccollection of our own missfortune however great we may think it, for it is also irreparable and was-inevitable. Mr Small offered to go down with Dr Hebberden but he will upon no account go from London & said he could be of no service as he conceived the disease to be one of the stomach & incurable.
Come my dear sir & immerse yourself in this sea of Bussiness as soon as possible, and do not add to the griefs of your friends by giving way to the tide of sorrow. I again repeat that it is your duty to chear up your mind & to pay a proper respect to your friend by obeying his precepts. I wait for you with impatience and assure yourself no endeavour of mine shall be wanting to render life agreeable to you
I have taken Dr Roebucks lodgings No 6. Suffolk street the Dr went to Bath upon Sunday with Dyson-With compliments to all our fellow Mourners I remain
Sincerely your Affectionate James Watt
