TitleLetter. Lord Dartmouth (Blackheath) to Matthew Boulton (Birmingham).
LevelItem
Date5 January 1773
DescriptionDear Sir,
As the London papers will probably have discover'd to you, that I have not entirely neglected the commission I receiv'd from you, with respect to a marking hall at Birmingham, it becomes necessary for me to guard you against giving too unlimited credit to the information of those deceitful records, which in this instance, as in most others, have gone a great way beyond the truth. I have gone no farther than general conversation with some officers of the Treasury upon the subject, in order to furnish myself with materials for farther conversation with you, when you come to town: this, however, has been sufficient to employ the pens of paragraph and letter writers, and to require the ingenuity of those who are fond of occasions to shew their talents.
I thought it incumbent upon me to let you know how far I have proceeded, that you might not be misled by any thing you might see in print upon this matter.
I am, dear sir, your most obedient humble servant,
Dartmouth
Blackheath,
5 January 1773.
