DescriptionDear Friend,
I am heartily sorry you cannot report progress; most sincerely do I wish you a perfect recovery, and speedily. I intend to write to Mr. Hog on Saturday, which he will receive on Tuesday, and will send you copy of it.
If you refer to copy of the letter I wrote to Mr. Hog on the 4th ultimo, you will there see the true state of Mr. Pocock's claim. The proposal now made by Mr. Gibson and Mr. Hog is very ensnaring, and therefore I think your card mentioned in the minutes of the meeting of creditors (No. 2) on the 10th last month very proper, and that it is not necessary for you to write again to Mr. Hog but as an act of civility, and if you do write again I wish you may think it proper to do it in the following tenor:
viz. 'Your favour of the 24th ultimo did not come to my hand untill the 1st instant at
night. I have again refered to copy of the letter Mr. Garbett wrote to you the 4th ultimo, and think the proposal of Mr. Gibson's too important to accept without the advise of eminent counsel upon a case fully stating the assignations of Carron stock made by Mr. Gascoigne to the Thistle Bank, Mr. Chace, and Mr. Barker, and the judgement of the Court of Session as to the authority Messrs. Hallifax and Stevenson had to act as trustees for the creditors of Francis Garbett & Co. and Charles Gascoigne.'
I hope you will charge postage of Mr. Hog's letter as assignee under the commission of bankruptcy against me.
I am ever affectionately and gratefully yours,
Samuel Garbett
Mr. Hog made a dividend of 1/6 in the £ on the 10th last month.
