Do not impute my late acknowledgement of your very friendly letter to an undue sense of the kindness with which it was dictated; believe me, I know and value the motives that induced it and consider them as additional tokens of your regard and esteem.
I approve so much of the channel of communication which my father has adopted that I shall, with your leave, continue it as more likely to conduce to our mutual wishes than a personal discussion; and, expecting to be in town efore the end of the month, I shall embrace that opportunity of conversing with you more at large upon this subject, and endeavouring by explicitly stating my views and sentiments to learn from my father upon what grounds he thinks them either censurable or objectionable.
I must own I do not concieve why he should be uneasy at an occurrence which is neither unusual, nor should I have thought an unexpected one to him. You know I have long since intimated to him my intentions of residing at Winson Green in case the house [should] [Parts of the copy have been torn away.] have been let; and it certainly must ap[pear . . .] a very singular reserve on the par[t of my fat]her to have suppressed every indica[tion of h]is dislike to the measure during the cou[rse] of four months. However, that I may not be thoug[ht] to prejudge the question, I shall forbear my remarks till I see you in town.
Mr. J. Watt set out in yesterday’s mail and the rest of the corps will follow in detachments to meet our host of witnesses. Every nerve will be strained to give the enemy a severe blow, as we think this struggle, if successful, will procure us future tranquillity.
