| Description | 'Mosley has left 100 [guineas] at Sharpe's. Surprize of the latter in [being] paid per advance. Allusions to my observations upon the sisterhood. Observes they have a Captain next-door.' Dear Sir, I am glad to learn you reach’d home safe and well after the disappointment you met with at your setting out. I saw your father for a very few minutes after his arrival in London on Friday evening and I have not seen him since, as I was obliged to be in the City early on Saturday morning and have since been out of town: but I hope to see him this evening and I shall not fail to remind him of the Russian business. I sent Mr. Mosley this morning to pay Mr. Sharp, who seem'd rather surprized that you shou'd think of paying him yet: he has taken a receipt, as you desired. I am glad to hear you found the ladies in good health and apparently in good spirits. As it seems matter of surprize to you that single women shou'd enjoy good spirits, I think you betray great want of compassion not to join one in holy wedlock. I shall not forget to give your best wishes to the sisterhood in Berkley Square, but remember we have a Captain next door. Pray give my love to your party and believe me, dear sir, yours truly, C. Matthews. [Punctuation, &c., amended.] |
