DescriptionDear Matt, You letter of yesterday affords me much satisfaction, being a proof of that filial regard and affection which is always due to an indulgent and kind parent, which you have in the extreme; and altho’ his endeavours have not been crown’d with success equal to his merits, yet I hope and trust it will be fully made up to him or his. As to paragraphs in the papers, they are beneath a thought; as such, disregard ’em; and as your father’s attention to the East India coinage is so essential, I wish him by all means to attend to it, as his personal attendance with respect to the A. M [Albion Mill] is by no means necessary, even shou’d Mr. Watt not come to town; to which purpose Mr. Wyatt (who call’d here to day) says he wrote Messrs. B. & W. with respect to the paper you inclosed; it certainly was in consequence of my letters signifying my concern and anxiety for the excess of the B/A, which hath been my study to keep down, being the only criterion of doing well; but your father being so sanguine in the copper coinage was, I fear, a grand cause. However, he hath means sufficient within himself to recover his past bad run of fortune, and your aid, which I doubt not will be administred to him, will be a balsam to his mind as well as a spur to an attention to his own interest, for the accomplishment of which rest assured my exertions shall be used, being with the utmost regard and esteem, dear Matt, your very affectionate friend, Wm. Matthews [Edited transcript.]
