DescriptionHugh William Boulton (1821-1847) was born 30 November 1821, the fourth child (and second son) of M.R.Boulton and his wife Mary Ann [see MS. 2063, Photocopy of W. Garland’s Diary, Vol. I, p. 15].
In or about 1832 he was sent away to board with a tutor, Rev. H. A. S. Atwood, of Kenilworth, where he shared a sleeping apartment with other pupils, and his studies included the Classics, dancing, writing, drawing, and French [MS 3782/13/17 (Atwood)].
he boarded with the Reverend W.C. Thompson at West Green House near Reading from 1838-1840.
He went up to Christ Church, Oxford in October 1840 but was rusticated in January 1842 for misconduct (setting off a firework).
Matthew Robinson Boulton attempted to secure him a position in a cavalry regiment with the aim ofhim going to India.
On 13 April 1842 he began a journey to the Continent, taking the steamer Sir Edward Banks from Blackwall to Ostend. [W. Langdon to M. R. Boulton, 13 April 1842. MS 3782/13/35/116]
He died, 18 July 1847, a bachelor.

This box includes college bills, especially for clothing, food and books; correspondence concerning Hugh William Boulton's time at college, rustication and his potential army career. There are also papers which do not particularly fit the heading, on general financial matters, some bills for timber etc. for Matthew Robinson Boulton.
