Soho Octr. 7-1804 My Dear Sir I have not heard of you, or from you, since I recvd. your favr of the 4 Sepr. from Bath and as I did not know where you was, or the state of your Nursery, I declind writing. When Mr James Watt was at home I obtaind a regular account of you all, but not since: except last night Miss Alston told me she had recvd a letter from Mrs. Watt with some account of my dear Friend Gregory: which upon the whole I consider rather favourable and though his recovery is slow as well as my own, Yet when I compare my present situation with what is was 12 Months ago, I find my self stronger, more free from pain, & capable of doing many things I could not then do, & am not without hope that Gregory & I may take some short Fossoll Journeys together next Year for I am now going to resume that subject again, & to arange al my Fossolls according to Mr Robert Jamesons System unless Gregory wishes me to delay it untill he returns.-A Mr Brendel was lately introduced to me (by 2 respectable letters) as a skilfull Miner & minerologist from Fryburgh where he Studyed form some time under Werner. He is just returnd from Scotland & is now gone into Cornwall, where he carrys letters to Mr Rashley & John William Junr & proposes to return by Birmingham & has offerd to assist me in my arangements. I wish for Mr Gregorys opineon of Jamesons System or any other he prefers.-I beg you will give my love to him & assure him I should have wrote him before this time but I was unwilling to vex him with writing an answer; which I know from experience is not a very Salutary employment for Invalids, but the greatest pleasure he can confir upon me, is to desire one of the Houshold to inform me that he is in a progressive state of recovery. I think I should be so if I could but enjoy a little more tranquility; but I have at this season of the Year such an incessant course of Visitors & letters that I have no time for reflection. I presume you know that I have had a Visit from Sir Joseph, Lady, & Miss Banks; with two of their Friends & the Revd Mr Wheeler & Dr. Winn At the same time I had Four Dumergues viz Mr & Miss, Mrs. N: & her Nephew Barker 3 Horses & Servt. Then followd the fecious Mr Lac for 6 days also the Russian Prince Bariatinksi & a Russian Nobleman also the Emperors favourite General Hitroff & Co-I was likewise particularly requested by John Motteux to entertain & shew every civility to the Price Carrini & Monsr. le Commander d'Aceto Knt. of Malta. I have also bestowd a day on my old Friend Mr Tough of Palermo & his Friend to say nothing of English & Scotch Friends & Military Visitors also Mr. Werberg & Mr Brendel I long for a deep Snow that Travillers may be confind at home & I to my bed I forgot to mention that Mr Pasco Grenfell with this friend Mr Daws have paid me a Visit with an Olive branch in their hands for the purpose of settle terms of peace and partition of Govermt Copper orders in future. Mr White of the House of Commons & his daughter are on a Visit at Sr. Robert Peels & propose to dine with e on Tuesday & Sr. Robert if he can The Revd. Mr Davies with his Wife (Miss Mynd) will be here on Tuesday & stay 9 or 10 days & God knows only who comes next. I hear you have got a pretty Cottage I wish you would secure it for me, that I may get out of the reach of all these Honours & Plagues. Be assured I feel more for you & Mrs. Watt than I choose to express, untill I am better acquainted wth. the state of your Health &c &c I beg you will present my kindest Love & best wishes to Mrs. Watt & to Gregory, & that you will accept of the same from Dear Sir Your affectionate Friend Mattw: Boulton |
