| Description | This file was opened by William Cheshire in the first decade of the 19th century and given the reference 'cD.' According to the Inventory made at that time, the title on the portfolio was 'Agents.-W. D. Brown, R. Chippendale, W. Cheshire, Jn. Glynn, Miscs. Soho Agents. 1805 to 1820.' But this portfolio appears to have been discarded.
Under M. R. Boulton's scheme of arrangement it was placed in Box I. I, and it was in the same place when it arrived at the Assay Office in 1921.
Within the portfolio, it appears that the documents divided among several packets, one for each correspondent, each one with its own yellow paper wrapper; but only one of these wrappers survives, labelled, "Wm D. Brown." Within this packet, two sets of documents were separated from the rest inside flimsy wrappers-one marked "W. D. Brown. Copies", the other "Settlement of his Account and Salaries, 1817." Probably a similar arrangement was followed for each of the other correspondents, and that scheme has therefore been adopted here. The wrapper for Chippindall's Copies survives.
The documents are now arranged in the following chronological series: William D. Brown: Letters. (1-36) William D. Brown: Copies. (37-44) William D. Brown: Settlement of his Account and Salaries, 1817. (45-51) Richard Chippindall: Letters, &c. (52-113) Richard Chippindall: Copies. (114-132) William Cheshire: Letters. (133-151) William Cheshire: Copies. (152-153)
The copy letters are all press-copies. The summaries in quotation-marks are taken from the contemporary dockets. |
