Description[The Puff you allude to is merely a paper one. The experiment was made on the great Canal near Glasgow: it made so little noise that I did not hear of it, until I saw it in the Newspaper. The engine is made by Symington and turns a Wheel, which made so much splashing that they were afraid of washing down the Canal Banks, though the Boat only moved about 2 miles per hour, the papers say three. Lord Dundas is the patronizer of the scheme. Symington has been constantly at it for twelve months past, on the Canal Co’s account. I find that Mr. Sheriff intends returning [from Russia] next summer. He has failed in his object, the lady he was to have been united to, declines. I cannot find he had any intentions of again entering into business there.]
