[I perceive you have revived the idea of an application to the Treasury for an increase of price equal to the rise of ores, and consequently that of copper—say £14 per ton or 1½d. per lb.—and for an increase in the pieces struck—say from 48 to 52: to both there are several objections. I cannot believe the Privy Council can think me so weak as to make offers without providing the means, or to suppose the house of Grenfell & Williams would undertake to sell me 600 tons without securing a supply. I therefore can on no just grounds or pretences open again the agreement. The ticketing papers could point out the great buyers. Secondly, the diameter and thickness of the edge of coins at 48 per lb. to be uniform with the former coin executed at Soho, is a great strain in execution.
