Dear Madam,
I duly received your favor of 18th, and agreeable to your directions I have placed £1600 in 3 per cent. Consols stock in your name, as you will perceive per enclosed transfer receipt, which sum purchased £1981. 8. 4 stock; the cost, £1600, is charged to your account with this firm. The price of stock has suddenly taken a start, but, according to present appearance of the money market, the opinion is in favor of a further advance.
In a letter last week from Mrs. Watt she mentioned that a conversation had passed between you and some of your friends relative to a chest of tea, and that Mr. Watt had expressed a wish to take a part, if you should determine to order the purchase to be made, adding that she should like to be admitted in the concern for a few pounds' weight. I mention this for your government, in case you should be disposed to have a chest sent you. If so, you will please inform me whether it should be the same sort and quality as that which I sent you heretofore.
A friend of mine, who is largely in the wine trade in Oporto, informs me that he has now an opportunity of shipping some very superior port wine to any which he has sent for years past. Now, as I have every confidence in his integrity, I mention the circumstance in case your stock or that of your friends should be getting low, it will be desirable to replenish with an article which may be depended upon, and may be had in either pipes or hogsheads.
I believe Mr. Boulton and Mr. Watt said last year that they had enough to last for many years, so that probably they do not want any.
