| Description | "Subscription to [Watt] monument."
London, 25 June 1824. Dear Madam, Agreeable to your directions I have paid £100 in your name as a subscriber for the monument to the late Mr. Watt, for which your account is debited. The amount already subscribed in London is about £3000, and no doubt will be considerably increased in a few days. I think there is little doubt of 7 or 8000£ being collected altogether, after the subscriptions at Manchester and Birmingham, &c., are opened. [A statue by Chantrey was set up by public subscription in Westminster Abbey, 1824. (Dickinson, James Watt: Craftsman and Engineer, p. 199.)] Mrs. Mosley begs to join me in best wishes for your health, being much obliged by your kind enquiries, and remain, dear madam, your much obliged and obedient, John Mosley |
