Sir
In my last of 1st Inst. I forgot to mention that a chain would be wanted for the lamp, as there is no possibility of getting one here, I am under the necessity of troubling you to procure one for me. The Lamp is intended to be suspended in this manner,
[There follows a diagram of the arrangement of the lamp and chain.]
H here represents the Lamp suspended by two chains over the moveable Pullies P, P, 6 feet distant from one another; the chains after passing over the pullies have two brass weights W, W, attached to them, which serve to counterbalance the lamp and to keep it exactly in the position shewn, 6 ft 6 Inches from the top of the room. I must trouble you also to get these Weights made in the form of round balls; as their size will depend upon the weight of the Lamp which I do not know, I must leave the fixing of it to you, only request it may be such as to allow the lamp to hand exactly in the position represented. The chains may be either of brass or Iron wire, since they will in all probability be painted; they must be about 10 feet long each, rather longer than shorter.
You will very much oblige me by getting the above made and charging it along with the lamp. I hope you will be able to forward me the whole in the course of a week and remain with true esteem
Sir
Your obd't h'ble Serv't
James Watt Junr.
P. S. You will see by the Position of the Lamp that it will be necessary to have a handle in H for the purpose of pulling it down.
