| Description | The majority of the plans in this box are undated, but from their context must date from the mid 19th century when the Soho Estate was being broken up for development. Many of them have measurements, but no other identification. Some of the items are in a fragile condition.
The documents do not appear to have been listed previously, but at some time in the past they were numbered. This original numbering has been largely adhered to, but in some cases, documents formerly numbered separately have been reunited as one number where it is obvious they belong together. In such cases the second number has been left unused, as indicated on the list.
Most of the papers here have no dockets, but where they do exist, they are added in italics. Comments in square brackets are provided by the cataloguer.
Matthew Boulton's development of his estate and its later demise are charted in Ballard, Loggie & Mason, A Lost Landscape: Matthew Boulton's Gardens at Soho (Phillimore, 2009), based on research in the Matthew Boulton Papers and elsewhere. |
