AdminHistoryThese papers form part of a group of miscellaneous documents characterised as ‘Additions’ which were acquired and added to the Matthew Boulton Papers after the latter came into the custody of the Birmingham Assay Office in 1921. The records concern the conveyance of land on Birmingham Heath from Mrs Mary Steward to James Alston in 1804, a purchase which Matthew Boulton helped to finance. They also contain deeds relating to Winson Hill, 1799-1820; deeds and papers belonging to the purchase of Egginton’s house and land, 1795-1839; and further deeds of Winson Hill, 1728-1821. The bundles were numbered 1, 3, 4 and 6. It is not clear whether originally there would have been further bundles numbered 2 and 5, or whether these have been merged with the existing bundles. In the list below the documents have been placed in chronological order within their respective bundles. Undated documents are grouped together at the end of their respective bundles.
Any dockets are given. Notes in square brackets are provided by the cataloguer.
For further material on the Alston family and these land holdings, see also MS 48 (1795-1898); there is also Alston family correspondence in Matthew Boulton’s ‘General Correspondence’, in various years.
