| Description | Miss Boulton has handed him Leader’s drawing and schedule of a carriage. Orders a landau, and wishes to know if there are any carriages made by Leader in the vicinity (of Soho) that he may inspect. Makes recommendations as to the design of the carriage. (Copy of an original in William Cheshire’s hand, signed by Boulton.) Soho, near Birmingham, October 1st, 1810. Sir, My sister has communicated to me a drawing [and] schedule of a carriage she received from you, which I return herewith, and shall thank you to add to the [drawing] a scale. Such articles as are wished to be had with th[e] carriage have been marked with a V, and I shall be obliged if you will have the goodness to furnish me with an estimate of a landau made in your best [style] and of the best materials, prepared under the consideration of the money being paid down on the delivery of the carriage. If there are any carriages of your building within twenty or thirty miles of this place, I could wish to have a reference to them, as an inspection might enable me to point some improvement in the construction of the carriage intended to be ordered. On the drawing are stated some remarks to which I would beg your attention: they have more particularly reference to the raising of the barouche seat, which it is thought may be made more elegant; to the rest of the landau, which is wished to be slightly convex instead of being perfectly flat; and to the seat behind, which it is thought would be better if it could be raised, without any considerable increase of weight, to nearly a level with the barouche seat, and to match with it in form. The charge for this item (the seat behind) appears to be particularly high, and very much more so in proportion than the extra charge for the barouche seat; it is hoped therefore that upon revision it will be somewhat reduced. In transmitting the drawing and estimate I shall thank you to return, at the same time, your printed schedule. I am, sir, your obedient servant, M. Robinson Boulton |
