| Description | Harrison Barrow (1868 - 1953) was the Friends' Service Committee's acting chairman, a former city councillor and Lord Mayor of Birmingham, who resigned from his civic offices in 1914 because of his opposition to the war. Louis Barrow (1865 - 1948) was Chief Engineer to Cadbury Brothers Ltd. for 30 years and to J. S. Fry and Sons for 12 years. Walter Barrow (1867-1954), solicitor, member of Birmingham Law Society from 1889 and its President from 1908-10, Managing Director of Cadbury Brothers Ltd 1918 - 1935, President of Birmingham Chamber of Commerce in 1929 and Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Birmingham 1933-1939.
In the late 1880s, Harrison Barrow, together with his brothers, Louis and Walter, built a steam boat, which they named 'Seagull'. This account by Harrison Barrow gives an account of two trips they made on the 'Seagull'. The first trip was from Birmingham to Chester and Chester to Oban via Ellesere Port, in the summer of 1889. The description is entitled 'A cruise in the ''Seagull'' on canal and river'. The second trip in 1891 was from Birmingham to Boston, via Peterborough, and from Boston to Nottingham back to Birmingham. This is a photocopy of a typescript document. |
