| Description | 1 small plate from Uffculme House. 1 small and 1 large plate from Severn Street Adult School, Class I (the class of William White). Uffculme House was built in 1891 as the home of Richard Cadbury (1835-1899) and his wife Emma (nee Wilson) Cadbury. Following her death in 1906, the house was inherited by their son Barrow Cadbury and his wife Geraldine (nee Southall) Cadbury. They generously allowed it to be used by the adult school movement for entertainment and social events from 1906 to 1913, and it seems likely that the plate dates from this period. An open air school for children was opened in the grounds of the house from 1911 which continued until the 1950s. In 1914 the house was used to accomodate Belgian refugees, from 1916-1929 it became a hopsital for disabled ex-servicemen, and following that a psychiatric hospital. It was given by Barrow and Geraldine Cadbury to the city of Birmingham in 1916. |
