TitleAtherstone Meeting House Charity
LevelSub Series
Date1940s - 1979
DescriptionIn 1729, John King bequeathed in trust a copyhold property on Long Street to Gregory Goodall with the condition that it be converted into a meeting house. The copyhold was then converted into freehold land by the Lord of the Manor of Atherstone enabling Goodall to fulfill King's charitable intentions by conveying the property to Trustees. Nathaniel Newton junior paid for a meeting house to be built on the site, as well as buildings which could be rented out. The income from these was to be used to help the poor within the parish of Mancetter. The meeting house closed in 1873 and the attached buildings were let out as workshops. In more recent times, surplus income was given to the poor at Atherstone, Hartshill and Oldbury, as well as Mancetter and also used to maintain Hartshill Meeting House.
