| Description | Consists of: 1/ Correspondence and plans relating to the re-building of the new meeting house at Bull St., 1931- 1935, designed by the architect Hubert Lidbetter.
2/ War Damage correspondence 1941 - 1945. This relates to notifications of war damage to meeting houses and land within Warwickshire Monthly Meeting caused by enemy action, and compensation claims made by the Society of Friends to the War Damage Commission, which had been established by the government, following the War Damage Act 1941.
3/ Correspondence relating to Birmingham Ring Road Scheme, 1946 - 1950 (File a 1946, file b 1947, file c 1948, file d 1949 - 1950). The Corporation of Birmingham's street improvement plan involved widening the existing roads around the site of Bull St. Meeting House (Steelhouse Lane and the Upper Priory) and demolishing a number of buildings to make way for what is now known as the Inner Ring Road. This involved demolishing the Friends' Institute, Library, Office and Caretaker's premises on the Bull St. Meeting House site, and necessitated the re-building of Priory Rooms. File c 1948 includes a description and plan of how the scheme affected the Society of Friends. Much of the correspondence in these files is between Edwin Ransome who was on the Monthly Meeting Premises Committee and Hubert Lidbetter, the architect responsible for carrying out the re-building of Priory Rooms. |
