LevelSub Series
Date1877 - 1984
DescriptionIn 1877, Mary Cadbury, the first wife of George Cadbury established a women's Adult School class, which met in Stirchley Co-operative Hall on a Monday afternoon. After Mary's death in 1887, the class was continued first by Richard Cadbury, then by his daughter Jessie and then by his second wife Emma. To meet the growing numbers attending Men and Women's Adult School and Sunday School classes, the Cadbury brothers built Stirchley Friends' Institute. The Women's Meeting moved to Stirchley Meeting House in 1930. After the Second World war, membership declined and by the time of closure in 1984, only a small group of members remained. Hannah Taylor was last President of the Women's Meeting.
