DescriptionThis item (and probably UC 2/15/2/1) was presented as evidence during a case taken out at the Kings Bench by the Reverend Dr. Joseph Priestley, plaintiff, against Thomas Archer and George Whateley, inhabitants of the Hundred of Hemlingford in the County of Warwickshire, who were involved in the disturbances in Birmingham that led to the ransacking and destruction of Priestley's house during the riots of July 1791. The Court of the King's Bench historically dealt with grave cases of unique and extremely serious cases of sedition, riot and open rebellion. This notebook gives an extremely detailed inventory of Priestley's property, including the outbuildings and grounds, right down to the location and value of wallpaper damaged by rioters! There is also an extremely interesting inventory of a large section Priestley's extensive collection of books and scientific instruments destroyed by the mob.
