| Title | Letter from Mr Thomas Lee to Mr Henry Bell |
| Level | Item |
| Date | 04/02/1792 |
| Description | Mr Lee discusses the deposition of Mr William Smith who is a witness in the Coates versus Archer case. Mr Smith testifies that Mr Coates's servants joined in the riot destroying Mr Coates's property while other servants were encouraging the mob to damage more property. Another part of this letter discusses how the prosecuting team acting in Worcestershire can avoid complaints of undue influence on the outcome of the trial. The acting magistrate Mr Holbach is a firm friend of Mr Lee and Mr Barker which, coupled with the retention of the three leading counsels on the circuit, means they have to decide whether to release one of the counsels to avoid the charge of prejudice. |
