DescriptionThere are no operational records of Birmingham City Police or successor bodies in our collections. There are some records for Birmingham's police force held at the West Midlands Police Museum, although an appointment would need to be made to view any material held there. A source list created by the Police History Society detailing the location of records of police forces in Birmingham and across the country is available in our archives search room (Wolfson Centre) on the 4th Floor of the Library of Birmingham (Ian Bridgeman and Clive Emsley, 'A guide to the archives of the police forces of England and Wales', June 1989).

AdminHistoryBirmingham's police force was known as the Birmingham City Police from 1842 - 1974. After 1974 the force became the West Midlands Police, after which it fell under the jurisdiction of West Midlands County Council, 1974 - 1986, then the West Midlands Police Authority after 1986.
