AdminHistoryThe Parliamentary and Chancery Sub-Committee was appointed to liaise between the Council and Parliament regarding specific proposed bills and legislation referred to it by the Council; good examples of this were the Gas and Water Bills, 1875. There are currently no minutes of this sub-committee prior to 1871 and as the minute numbers often start again, as with the Corporation Consolidation Act of 1882, after which it seems that the sub-committee may have been formed when needed, rather than be a standing sub-committee. The function of this sub-committee was originally delegated to the standing Parliamentary Committee between 1842 and 1848 (see BCC 1/AB). The sub-committee was reconstituted in 1871 as the Parliamentary and Chancery Sub-Committee, before being renamed the Parliamentary Sub-Committee in 1875, and, again, as the Law and Parliamentary Sub-Committee in January 1922.

Two sub-sub-committees were also reported to this sub-committee. One was appointed in September 1953 to consider a draft of the proposed Corporation Bill (see BCC 1/AG/36/1/19). The other was appointed in July 1967 to carry out the issuing of gaming licenses, the function of which previously belonged to the Public Safety Committee (see BCC 1/DF), although there are reports and other records dating up to March 1974. These minutes are in the volume entitled 'Watch Committee, Judicial Sub-Committee Minutes', although the sub-committee reported to the General Purposes Committee (see BCC 1/AG/3/1/38).
