DescriptionSome later minute volumes indexed. The minutes are handwritten and printed and signed by the committee Chairman. The minutes are in uniformly titled committee minute volumes, and include the reports of the Chief Inspectors of the Weights and Measures Department, the Chief Veterinary Inspector's Reports and the Markets Superintendents Reports. These touch on all aspects of the committee's work, and document individual cases concerning areas such as animal welfare (relating to horses, mules and other beasts in the care of other city departments), insanitary conditions in the markets and individual stalls, other nuisances such as cooking smells, gases and smoke, and the selling of incorrectly measured or weighed products (including court summons). There are also copies of the reports of the committee to Council, reports of the City Treasurer, reports of the City Treasurer, statements of estimated and actual annual income and expenditure. There are detailed reports on the inspection of individual private slaughterhouses and market stalls, with details on all meat and other foodstuffs surrendered as unfit for human consumption. There is also more general information relating to land appropriation, purchase and selling, plus other details concerning staffing and committee officials. There are also reports of departmental fact-finding visits to markets and associated local authority offices in other major towns and cities in the United Kingdom. There are also some lists of market stall holders and others in breach of public health and other legislation, with details of penalty imposed (if any).
