DescriptionMinute volumes indexed. The minutes are handwritten and signed by the committee Chairman. The minutes are in the volumes entitled 'Health Sub-Committee'. The minutes of the Yardley Road and Lodge Hill Road Hospital Sub-Committees are in the volume entitled 'Health Sub-Committee, Yardley Rd Hospital'. The minutes of the Yardley Road (Little Bromwich) Sub-Sub-Committee are in the sub-sub-committee minute volume BCC/1/AR/2/1/12. The minutes include a few reports relating to the hospitals that fell under the care of the committee (including some reports of specific disease cases admitted), summaries of total numbers of streets and courtyards cleaned (including some details of specific works on individual streets), information on samples (i.e. food and chemicals) analysed, smoke reports and other information relating to environmental monitoring, licensing applications, printed copies of public health legislation and regulations, some legal proceedings, accounts and statements of income and expenditure, details on departmental staff and wages. The minutes also of 9 February 1900 include a bill posted in respect of a fine levied on the occupiers of a court situated at Bradford Street for keeping their property in an insanitary condition, stating: 'The Magistrates severely reprimanded them, pointing out that through their carelessness they were endangering their health and frustrating the intentions of the Health Committee, and that should cases arise they would be more severely dealt with' (see minutes 5431 in BCC/1/AR/2/1/8). The minutes largely supplement the information contained in the main committee minutes (see BCC/1/AR/1/1), providing more detail on the process of inspection, the increase of the powers of the Council as successive Public Health Acts were passed by parliament and the impact these powers had on various neighbourhoods and the people who lived and worked in them during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
