DescriptionMinutes indexed. The minutes are handwritten and signed by the committee Chairman. The minutes are in the appropriately titled committee minute volume. The Sewage Committee minute volumes continue the minute sequence from the Sewage Inquiry Committee minute (see BCC/1/AV/1/1). The minutes include quarterly printed committee reports to Council regarding current sewage provision and proposed works, legal proceedings regarding sewerage provision (particularly the case of Sir Charles Adderley vs the Birmingham Corporation), the progress of the Sewerage Bill reports. Additionally, there are reports of the Interception Sub-Committee, which include detailed analysis of the day-to-day operations and efficiency of waste collection and disposal and sewage treatment works in Birmingham during the 1870s and 1880s. There are also reports of inspections carried out on sewage works and insanitary areas, tables detailing analyses of waste matter analysed, the reports of the Town Clerk, statements relating to streets sewered per year with length of sewerage covered in yards, accounts and statements of income and expenditure (including tenders for works), some relation to staffing, particularly the appointment to the position of Clerk of the Works (see meeting of 18 June 1873, minute 860, in BCC/1/AW/1/1/1) and related correspondence and papers. The minutes of 1 January 1873 include a very detailed report on the work of the committee, including correspondence by Herr Lefeldt, a Commissioner appointed by the German government to report on the present state of the current state of the 'Sewage Question' in Great Britain (see minute 718 in BCC/1/AW/1/1/1).
