AdminHistoryThe purpose of Sewage Sub-Committee was appointed in October 1871, the same month the Sewage Inquiry Committee (see BCC/1/AV) was renamed the Sewage Committee. The sub-committee was instructed by the predecessor committee (possibly its last act), was to 'take charge of the sewage farm and works at Saltley. This had been found, following a recent visit to inspect the works, in a very unsatisfactory state. The forthcoming works involved the draining of large areas of land, as well as the cleaning, widening and deepening out of watercourses, later used to grow vegetables. By May 1873, cement was also being produced on-site, using the sewage as a binder, a process still used today. By May 1874, there were herds of cows and pigs on the farm, the cows also producing sellable milk.
