Date1949 - 1973
DescriptionMinute volumes indexed and signed by the committee Chairman. The minutes were compiled in typescript format. The volumes were originally accessioned under the reference MS 280/1. For records dated before 1949 see the minutes of the Special Schools Sub-Committee (BCC/1/BH/5/1) and the Hygiene Sub-Committee (BCC/1/BH/10/1). The minutes contain details of the remit of the sub-committee as outlined above, including details of the development and running of the School Health Service and its future in the early 1970s; the appointment of named medical staff for School Health Service; statistical summaries of dental and medical treatment delivered to children; discussion of the transfer of medical supervision work to Health Committee of children in institutions which became the responsibility of the Children’s Committee in 1948; and the appointment of teaching staff and guides/attendants for the special schools. Later minute books include printed leaflet inserts with Reports on individual special schools by HM Inspectors and a Medical Officer of the Ministry of Education. The minutes include names of children, their addresses, name of special school and other details of their situation

The Special Schools Sub-Committee appointed a Special Schools After Care Sub-Committee in 1903 and, later, a Special Schools After Care Case Committee in 1939. Both of these sub-sub-committees reported to the Special Services Sub-Committee from October 1949 but the minutes dated after 1949 could not be listed with the Special Services Sub-Committee records as they are in a volume which could not be physically split between the Special Schools Sub-Committee records and the Special Services Sub-Committee records. As the post 1949 minutes of the sub-sub-committees were left with the Special Schools Sub-Committee records it was decided to also leave the small amount of post 1949 reports of these committees in the Special Schools section of the list. For records of the Special Schools, later Special Services, After-Care Sub-Committee and After-Care Case Committee 1927- 1962 see BCC/1/BH/5/2 in the Special Schools Sub-Committee section of the list (see BCC/1/BH/5).
