AdminHistoryIn April 1916, the Elementary Education Sub-Committee resolved that a Domestic Subjects Sub-Committee be appointed to administer all domestic subjects taught in city schools and related centres, as well as the appointment and dismissal of Domestic Subjects teachers. At that time instruction in cookery, laundry and housewifery was being reorganised on a wide scale by a scheme which had the approval of the Education Committee. The scheme involved all girls in elementary schools receiving a stipulated amount of instruction in cookery, laundry work and household management in designated centres, with the opening of new centres. The functions of the sub-committee were extended in 1927 when work in connection with the provision of meals was transferred from the Attendance, Finance and General Purposes Sub-Committee (see BCC/1/BH/7).

With the reorganisation of age groups in schools after 1926, the Domestic Subjects Centres were largely replaced by instruction in the new senior schools. It was felt that the Teaching Staff Sub-Committee could easily take over the appointment and allocation of Domestic Subjects Teachers, as it did for all other categories of teacher. It was also felt that the provision of meals work could also be undertaken directly by the Elementary Education Sub-Committee without the employment of a sub-sub-committee; a rota of ‘visitors’ was appointed to visit both the remaining Domestic Subjects Instruction Centres and the Free Meals Centres. The Domestic Subjects Sub-Committee was disbanded following its final meeting in October 1932.
