| AccessConditions | The minutes and supplemtary records of the Special Schools After Care Sub-Committee contain sensitive personal data about children throughout. The minutes include names of individuals (usually then adults) who once attended special schools and who are to be discharged from statutory or voluntary visitation. There are also reports that include the names of individuals now discharged from special schools, date of birth, parent's names and occupations, address, name of special school attended, dates of attendance, and summary of employment history. The records have therefore been closed for 100 years, in accordance with the Data Protection Act (1998). |
| AdminHistory | At the first meeting of the Special Schools Sub-Committee in April 1903, a Special Schools After-Care Sub-Committee was appointed to maintain contact with children who had been educated in special schools and to assist them in finding suitable employment. As problems later arose with the continued visitation of former pupils who had attended special schools but were now married with their own children, the Special Schools Sub-Committee formed a Special Schools After-Care Case Committee in March 1939 to try to alleviate feelings of interference. The minutes of the two committees are recorded in the same volumes. The Case Committee met approximately every six months, and married former pupils and other cases deemed suitable were reported with a view to discharge from visitation. From October 1949 both the After Care Sub-Committee and the After-Care Case Committee reported to the Special Services Sub-Committee (see BCC/1/BH/16/1). |
