AdminHistoryThe Rating and Valuation Committee was formed in April 1926 to administer the forthcoming revaluation of the city under the Rating and Valuation Act of 1925. The effect of this Act was to bring the parish of Handsworth into the County Borough of Birmingham for rating purposes, which left only Erdington, Kings Norton and Northfield with a differential rating system (these were incorporated later).

Prior to the passing of this Act, there were four valuation districts in Birmingham, but this was increased to five, with a Central Division, and two each covering the north and south of the city. The committee was then required to fix the value of the borough and poor rate every six months, ending on the last day of March and September accordingly, for domestic and business premises, collect the said rates, listen to appeals and to prosecute or act upon unpaid rates.
