AdminHistoryThe Local Pension Committee took its structure in accordance with the advice of the Town Clerk, and established several sub-committees, each to assist in administering the Old Age Pensions Act within the separate geographical areas of Birmingham. Sub-committee ‘A’ dealt with All Saints’, St Paul’s and St George’s Wards in central Birmingham; ‘B’ dealt with Balsall Heath, St Martin’s, Edgbaston and Harborne Wards; ‘C’ dealt with Deritend, Market Hall and St Bartholomew’s Wards; ‘D’ with St Stephen’s, St Mary’s, Duddeston and Nechells Wards; ‘E’ with Rotten Park, Ladywood and St Thomas’s Wards; ‘F’ with Bordesley; and ‘G’ with Saltley. The number of sub-committees was eventually raised to ten (A - K), but by 1929, due to the raising of the pensionable age to 65, the number of claims had halved, and the number of sub-committees was reduced to five, meeting in weekly rotation. These sub-committees dealt with much of the individual pension cases, whereas the main committee minutes tend to deal with the over-all financial figures, committee and sub-committee appointments. Sub-committees A - E were a post 1929 arrangement, after the number of claims reduced significantly in the preceding years. These sub-committees performed the same function as those early but met on a weekly rota basis rather than being organised by geographical area.
