AdminHistoryIn 1949, the Agriculture and Smallholdings Committee was separated into its component committees under Part IV of the 1947 Agriculture Act, which allowed for the constitution of a separate Smallholdings Committee. The aim was for the new Smallholding Committee to administer the new Canwell estate and the existing Agriculture and Smallholdings Committee was to continue all other business under the name of the Agricultural Committee (see BCC/1/CV). This it did so until the 25 April 1957, when the functions of the committee were transferred to the Smallholdings Committee. The new mandate of the Smallholdings Committee was to manage all land in the ownership of the Corporation reserved or intended to be reserved as permanent green belt land or rural areas restricted against ordinary building. The land could be put to recreational use, but could not be placed under the charge of any other committee. After a recommendation by the General Purposes Committee on 14 April, 1964, the Allotments Committee and the Smallholdings Committee were amalgamated. The Chairman of the Allotments Committee reported that this was due to the similar nature of their work, as well as to increase the existing pool of knowledge and provide a better overall service.
