TitleBuilding plan registers
LevelSub Series
Date1876 - 1961
DescriptionSome of the early registers are very fragile and have to be pre-ordered from our archive stores. Enquirers looking for plans for houses dated 1876 - 1898 should check the card index in the Wolfson Centre, Floor 4, Library of Birmingham. Other plan registers are stored kept on open shelves in the Wolfson Centre. Full information is provided in the catalogue entries for each respective register.

Please note, for that fell outside of the city of Birmingham when a particular house was built, you would need to check the lists of the relevant local authority area who dealt with planning control when that house was built. For example, if you were looking for a building plan of a house built on a street in present day Aston prior to 1911 would need to check the building plan lists and indexes for Aston Manor Board (Collection Ref: BCA). From 1911 Aston fell under the City of Birmingham following the extension of the city boundary that year, therefore you would need to check the relevant registers for Birmingham. Please ask a member of staff for further information.

To order a plan located in the register for a particular street please speak to a member of staff. You would need the plan number referred to in the register preceded by Birmingham Building Plan [BBP], for example BBP 1416, BBP 12546/80 etc.

Not all of the plans listed in the registers may actually survive in our collections, particularly for later periods when the Planning Department tended to retain plans large scale housing developments or commercial or public building plans. Some early building plans may be fragile and unfit to serve.
