| Description | As well as those children boarded out, there were those who were directly in the charge of the Guardians, and over whom the Union had assumed parental control. These children were either cared for in the Workhouse itself, or within a local school or cottage home. However, in 1911 a Local Government Board Order extended the classes of children eligible for boarding-out, and they too were moved into private foster homes.
This volume details those children brought under the care of the Guardians as a result of desertion or maltreatment by their parents. As well as the name and age of each child, the cause of admission and the last known address of the parents are included. The date at which the child will cease to be under control of the Guardians is given in many cases, and sometimes the fate of the child after leaving the Board's care - whether formally adopted by a foster parent, or put into service - is detailed. |
