TitleWorkhouse Committee
LevelSub Series
Date1899 - 1912
DescriptionThe Workhouse Committee, appointed at the Aston Guardians' first meeting, was established to evaluate the cost of running the workhouse at Erdington, and to consider any improvements necessary which would make the Workhouse 'more commodious' to its inmates (see GP AS/2/1/1). The committee initially consisted of 6 members of the Board, but this figure had risen to 14 by the end of the century. The committee would also have been central to the building of a new workhouse at Gravelly Hill during the late 1860s and early 1870s, but unfortunately the volumes for this period do not survive.

The volumes contain information on the paid officials employed in the Workhouse, recommendations for changes to the fabric of the Workhouse, and its contents, and details re the movement of inmates, including entries from the Workhouse punishment book. The volumes are indexed.
